The dark mark is probably a sort of psychic bond as well (albiet a weak one) in the sense that it is tied to a residual sort of Occlumency? I mean, if VMo can keep tabs enough to say 'one of you has left me forever' there must be something there, right?

I'd think that getting the mark must be painful. Probably because the pain is what brings the cause closer and nearer to your body (so that you don't forget the power that you've aligned yourself to), which is perhaps why Regulus bolted. Perhaps the pain gave him clarity.
